Global HERC Community

When should an organization consider updating its mission, vision, and values?  For HERC, last year’s 20^th anniversary milestone was a time to celebrate and reflect on how the organization has changed over the years. At the same time, the pandemic forced HERC to think through how it will operate in the ‘new normal.’

These events made it clear that the organization’s purpose wasn’t fully captured or communicated in our mission, vision, and values. Working with the consortium’s governing bodies, we took a hard look at our identity and shared vision for the future.

“During the process, we thought about where HERC is going and what it will do to get there,” said Eddie Freeman, HERC Advisory Board Chair. “We are pleased that HERC’s new mission, vision, and values better reflect our commitment to building and supporting a diverse, equitable, and inclusive higher education workforce.”

MISSION:

HERC is a nonprofit consortium of colleges, universities, and related groups committed to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in the higher education workforce.

VISION:

A diverse, equitable, and inclusive higher education workplace where people from all backgrounds and perspectives can thrive.  

VALUES:

• Collaboration - We strive to create a community of practice by connecting our member institutions, and by partnering with related non-profits, K-12 education, business, and industry to help advance HERC's mission.
• Diversity - We serve as a leading resource for strategies, best practices, and resources in the recruitment, selection, and retention of a diverse and equitable workforce.
• Leadership - We believe that higher education has the responsibility to serve as leaders in creating workplaces that support diversity, equity, and inclusion.
• Outreach - We cultivate connections between prospective job seekers and dual career couples to help create diverse pools of applicants for our members.
