Upholding Our Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion

In the aftermath of the recent Supreme Court rulings concerning the use of race-conscious student admissions practices, HERC remains committed to our mission to support our unique community of human resources, faculty affairs, and related professionals. This means supporting a broad range of job seekers in obtaining and advancing in higher education careers and providing our member institutions with the resources and opportunities for dialogue to promote equitable and inclusive recruitment and retention policies and practices.

Reprioritizing Workforce Needs to Shape the Higher Education Workplace

We continued to flex our strengths to meet changing job seeker needs. While our commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in the higher education workforce grew stronger, the “Great Resignation” challenged our members to fast-track recruitment initiatives, retention programs, and policy changes to appeal to today’s higher ed job seeker. We leveraged our resources to produce up-to-date programs and content that bolstered our members’ efforts to achieve their goals.

Finding Inspiration, Building Momentum

HERC made tremendous progress to end systems and structures that create inequity. We took a hard look at our identity and shared vision to develop new organizational statements that reflect our commitment to building a diverse, equitable, and inclusive higher education workforce. We produced timely and relevant resources for members and job seekers to support diverse and inclusive workplaces. Despite the progress that we achieved, we recognized that there is still much work to be done.

2019-2020 Annual Report

Twenty Years of Advancing Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion in Higher Education

As HERC celebrated its 20th anniversary, our nation and the world confronted a global pandemic that illuminated the disproportionate impact of the Coronavirus on communities of color, economically disadvantaged populations, the elderly, and working families. We lived amid a reignited Black Lives Matter movement, combating institutional and systemic racism while interrogating the policies, practices, and behaviors that defined the “status quo."

2018-2019 Annual Report

Connect

In 2018-19, HERC represented our members at an unprecedented number of career fairs and disciplinary conferences. We also redesigned HERCJobs.org—our jobseeker-focused website—representing member institutions' jobs to millions of diverse, talented professionals. HERC also launched several new initiatives for our members: HERConnect, an online community of practice for advancing equity in the academic workforce; as well as a search committee toolkit.
