More than ever, we are in a candidate-driven, brand-conscious talent market. Demographics are shifting and technology is changing how potential candidates view our institutions and positions, making it ever-more difficulty to reach talented candidates and build a diverse pool. Even a highly ranked research university like Princeton is not immune to this challenge. Taking a cue from industry, Princeton embarked on a branding initiative to better understand and communicate the value of considering an administrative career at Princeton. Assistant Vice President for Human Resources Claire Jacobs Elson will discuss Princeton’s overall recruitment strategic objectives and how Princeton developed an employer branding initiative, from building a business case to early research findings to implementation, lessons learned, and implications for retention.
Claire Jacobs Elson has worked at Princeton University in the Office of Human Resources for the past 27 years. Throughout her career, almost exclusively within higher education, she has worked in most HR functions, and currently leads a team 20 individuals in the areas of the talent acquisition, communications and multimedia, recognition events, budget, and visitor reception. Claire is an alumna of Barnard College and obtained her Master of Arts and Master of Education in applied human development and counseling from Columbia University’s Teachers College. Claire is proud to work at Princeton and welcomes the opportunity today to share what HR has been working on to recruit staff to Princeton.
