Remembering Eddie Freeman, HERC Champion and Leader
It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we inform you of the passing of HERC champion and DEI leader, Eddie Freeman. It is an immense loss for our community, and we mourn the departure of a visionary leader, mentor, and dear friend.

Eddie played an instrumental role in shaping the foundation of HERC. With unwavering dedication, he guided us through big changes and towards growth. His vision for HERC was to continue to grow and connect our community of practice; collaborate to build tools and knowledge that allow us to advance our shared mission; and continue on a path that strengthens the organization. His passion and commitment have been an inspiration to all of us.

Eddie joined HERC in 2011, around the time when North Texas HERC launched. He was a key contributor to the merger of North Texas HERC and South Texas HERC into Greater Texas HERC in 2015. He served as treasurer, then chair of the HERC Finance Committee for many years. He then served as chair of the HERC Governance Board for five years, guiding HERC through leadership changes, a pandemic, and financial challenges. He later served as an At-Large member of the Governance Board through 2022.

Eddie served as the Executive Director, Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion at the University of Texas at Arlington. Prior to joining UT Arlington in 2018, he worked for 18 years at the Staubach Company and held leadership positions at several non-profit organizations, including The Bridge Foundation, Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation, and The Grand Prairie Housing and Finance Corporation.

As we mourn the loss of Eddie, let us also reflect on the remarkable achievements and lasting impact he had on HERC, the higher ed workforce DEI movement, and his community.

Please keep Eddie's family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult period. We extend our deepest condolences to his wife, Zelda, his children, and the entire family.
