In this joint webinar from the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) and the Higher Education Recruitment Consortium (HERC) we will explore how to reduce bias and remove barriers to recruiting and retaining Latinx faculty. Speakers will introduce model programs and novel approaches that have proven to be successful on their campuses, and they will discuss how COVID-19 introduces new challenges to our recruitment and retention efforts. Participants will come away from this session with actionable ideas for the successful recruitment, selection, retention, and advancement of Latinx faculty.
Donna Maria Blancero is the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs at Bentley University. Donna Maria previously served as the Dean of Business and the Dean of the Graduate School at Bentley, at which time she was one of three Latina business deans in AACSB accredited Universities in the United States. She is passionate about issues of inclusion and equity.
Donna Maria is a Fellow in the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and is the recipient of several awards for diversity, including the National Society of Hispanic MBA’s Brillante Award for Hispanic Education, the National Black MBA Diversity Educator Award, and the MLK Leadership Award from Bentley University. She is a PhD Project Faculty and chairs their Committee on Hispanic Excellence, which was named a White House Initiative under the Obama administration.
Donna Maria is twice the recipient of the SACNAS Presidential Award (2010 & 2018) and co-leads the SACNAS Linton-Poodry Leadership Institute and the Advanced Leadership Institute, the NAMIC Multicultural Leadership Program, and Wells Fargo’s Latin Leaders Program, as well as other leadership programs. She is the founding editor for The Business Journal of Hispanic Research and is a national speaker on issues related to Hispanic Leadership, Inclusion, and Unconscious Bias. Her research has focused primarily on Hispanics and other people of color in Corporate America, and has been published in journals such as the Journal of Organizational Behavior, Industrial Relations, Hispanic Journal of Behavioral Sciences, Human Resource Management, Cross Cultural Management, Journal of Career Development, and the International Journal of Management. She published a book entitled: Hispanics at Work: A Collection of Research, Theory and Application.
Donna Maria received her PhD from Cornell University and was the first Latina to graduate with a PhD from the ILR School. She is a proud Nuyorican, born and raised in Brooklyn, and enjoys spending time with her large extended family.
Provost Carol Parker joined New Mexico State University in July of 2019. Previous to this appointment, she served as the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Texas at El Paso, and Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs at the University of New Mexico, where she also served as Associate Dean for Finance and Administration, and as a tenured Professor of Law.
The Provost works with deans, faculty and staff across the campus to continue developing and promoting NMSU’s strategic plan, LEADS 2025, to enhance the excellence of its academic and research programs, while successfully offering opportunities for social mobility and student success to first-generation and historically underserved student populations. As a first-generation college student, Provost Parker understands the power of higher education to change lives.
As an administrator, Provost Parker has focused on student success, faculty recruitment and development, faculty compensation, academic program development and review, accreditation, budget and finance, capital projects and facilities, economic development, fundraising, policy development, compliance and risk management, information technology and data governance, and strategic planning.
Parker received her Juris doctorate from Wayne State University Law School, a master’s degree in information science from The University of Michigan, and a bachelor’s degree in humanities from Michigan State University’s Honor’s College. Parker maintains her license to practice law in Michigan, where she worked as an attorney.
