Join HERC and the Samuel DeWitt Proctor Institute For Leadership, Equity & Justice for an in-depth conversation with administrators and faculty on the growing movement to recognizing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) work in the retention and tenure process. Panelists will discuss how this conversation evolved on their campus, the challenges and wins, and the changes to policies, procedures, and practices. They will also explore the impact on individual faculty, particularly faculty of color, and how they these changes could impact the future of DEI work on their campus.

Speakers:

 

Marybeth Gasman is the Samuel DeWitt Proctor Endowed Chair in Education and a Distinguished Professor. She serves as the Executive Director of both the Samuel DeWitt Proctor Institute for Leadership, Equity, and Justice and the Rutgers Center for Minority Serving Institutions. Marybeth is the Chair of the Rutgers University-New Brunswick Faculty Council and the Associate Dean for Research in the Graduate School of Education at Rutgers. Her newest books include Candid Advice for New Faculty Members: A Guide to Getting Tenure and  Advancing Your Academic Career (Myers Education Press, 2021) and Doing the Right Thing: How to End Systemic Racism in Faculty Hiring (Princeton University Press, 2022).


Cheron H. Davis is an associate professor in the Elementary Education Department at Florida A&M University’s College of Education. She is a former elementary teacher with over eight years in higher education. She earned her doctorate in reading education from Auburn University. Cheron’s research interests include multicultural literature, professional development of pre-service and practicing teachers, and multicultural pedagogy in the reading curriculum. In her free time, Cheron enjoys college football, reading novels, and spending time with her family.

Margaret R. Ferguson is the Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the  Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). Previously, she served as the Assistant Vice President for Statewide Academic Relations in the Office of the Executive Vice President for University Academic Affairs at Indiana University. She is also a professor of political science in the School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI.

In her current position, she focuses on policies and practices related to faculty development and success. Relevant examples include promotion and tenure, faculty grievances, career enhancement, and other efforts designed to make IUPUI an employer of choice. In addition, she serves as the Academic Affairs contact for new program and degree proposals. Margie's portfolio includes the Center for Teaching and Learning, the Center for Translating Research into Practice, Faculty Affairs, the Office for Intergroup Dialogue and Civil Community, and the Office for Women.

 

Tuba Özkan-Haller is the Associate Vice President for Research Administration and Development at Oregon State University as well as Professor in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences and the College of Engineering. As Associate Vice President for Research Administration and Development Özkan-Haller is responsible for leading the Office of Sponsored Research and Awards Administration as well building research development capacity and providing the strategy to meet the needs of OSU’s growing research enterprise. She previously also served as Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Advancement in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences.
