Diversifying Staff and Administrator Leadership Positions: Beyond Targets to Action

In academic environments where student demographics are rapidly changing, little is known about the academy’s workforce plan to diversify its senior leadership and staff roles, specifically recruiting and retaining Black women administrators. Research points to the academy’s disproportionate underrepresentation of Black women administrators compared to their White counterparts. Such demographic disparities are alarming, and warrant intentional action that leads to a transformation of the academy’s workforce landscape. This presentation not only provides the lived experiences of Black female leaders, but also offer practical strategies to diversify staff and administrator roles. 

 

 

Speaker(s) Bios

Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Roan Educational Consulting, Dr. Kimberly Roan, has over twelve years of experience developing and managing educational programs and evaluating diverse programs for educational institutions and businesses.

 

Dr. Roan’s higher education experience includes service as Dean of Student Affairs, Registrar, Director of Diversity and Inclusion, HR consultant, and Adjunct Instructor. Dr. Roan most currently served as the Enterprise Director at MMB, where she led, directed, and managed the talent strategy for the executive branch of Minnesota State Government. In this role, Dr. Roan provided oversight of the development of policies, priorities, and programs to improve productivity of state employees, increase leadership capabilities, attract and retain top talent, and ensure an inclusive work environment for all. In addition to her professional appointments, Dr. Roan serves as the President of the Minnesota Chapter of the Association of Black Women in Higher Education (ABWHE).

 

Dr. Roan earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Early Childhood Education from Albany State University; a Master of Education in Curriculum Development from the University of Minnesota, and a Doctorate of Education in the Higher Education Administration from St. Cloud State University.
